Today we met with the general contractor and the cabinet-making and mill work subcontractor to take measurements inside the dojo. The subcontractor was very excited about using as much of the existing wood as possible in the new dojo for conservation. Sensei loved to use found objects like stone, concrete, timber, and wood to incorporate into the design of the garden and the dojo. Of course he made many trips to the lumber yard as well and he either hand-picked or inspected every piece of wood that went into the construction of our existing dojo. It made us very comfortable to know that this particular subcontractor would be overseeing the deconstruction of our current first floor and the construction of our new first floor. Utilizing the existing wood has special meaning not only because we will be conserving the environment; we will be transferring the spirit of our dojo. The dojo that was built by our teacher.
